Why am I being told my copy of Microsoft Office is not genuine? I just got this dialog box pop up when I tried opening a word document and the program is inactive (blue background document not opened and greyed out icons) "This copy of Microsoft Office is not genuine. Please excuse this interruption. This copy of Office did not pass validation. Click Learn More for online details and help identifying the best way to get genuine Microsoft Office." With the title "Microsoft Office Genuine Advantage" and the option to either "Learn More" or "Remind Me Later". I'm sure it's genuine because I bought my laptop from Dell and had the pre-installed Office working perfectly for 4-5 years. I was going to click "Learn More" but I'm worried it might be a virus or something (forgive my ignorance if that's impossible - I've got an anti-virus but I don't know still). What do you think? Try the following: 1) Open My Computer located on your desktop (or click the Windows logo or Start button on the lower left and then click your User Name) 2) Go to: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftOfficeData (For Windows 7, C:ProgramDataMicrosoftOFFICEDATA) 3) Right click the data.dat file (it may have a different name other than data), then click “Delete. This data.dat file is for Office 4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it. 5) If product activation was successful try the Office Genuine Advantage (OGA). Try the following:

3) Right click the data.dat file (it may have a different name other than data), then click “Delete. This data.dat file is for Office

4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.

Umm.. if Office was preinstalled, it is a trial version and only works for 60 days. If you purchased a license for it there may be something wrong with the software, like corruption. You could try running disk check and defrag, then run "detect and repair" from Office help menu. See if that takes care of it. If not, you can try uninstalling it and reinstalling it from the CD that came with your laptop or from the installation files that may be on your hard drive. its almost definately not a virus. i suggest clicking learn more. this is a very strange thing to happen 4 years after you installed the program. have you made any major changes to your computer software recently? do you have any more information? email me if you can get any more info, maybe i can help you more. its almost definately not a virus. i suggest clicking learn more. this is a very strange thing to happen 4 years after you installed the program. have you made any major changes to your computer software recently? do you have any more information? email me if you can get any more info, maybe i can help you more.
